City Series: London

LONDON is the craziest place on earth! Insanely high rent, tourists swarming everywhere. And, of course, the Royal family…

But London is also an incredibly beautiful city. Really. This is why so many great movies are set in London. And this is why London’s streets also are considered one of the most beautiful backgrounds for photographers. EVER! Did you have a client sending you to London to shoot? If not, we can help!

For our city series we commissioned one of the best photographers of our time to shoot backgrounds for us. Our first set was the Venice set, and it was so good that we had to get another European capital – London.  And we LOVE it: The elegant townhouses, the typical red phone booths and many a royal palace form the backdrop for urban composing.

But it is not only the city that makes this package different. This package is fundamentally different from your average vacation photos and other stock photos. As with the Venice set, to place a model in a pre-made backdrop you have to take the photo with the composite in mind… Which luckily, we did:

Most photographers shoot models as good as they can. This means that the model is probably “sitting” on more than 20 megapixels, and if they are standing than it is 20 megapixels shot vertically . Landscapes and cities, however, are mostly shot landscape mode . This means that you either have to squash your model or shoot bigger landscapes. Which we did!  The backdrops are a massive 80 megapixels files (or 10,000 x 7,500 px), so no scaling!scaling-free work.

The focal point in the pictures was deliberately set “wrong” – we are not focusing on the building, but rather on where a model will be placed, so you would get a sweet, sweet bokeh of a Schneider-Kreuznach lens

City Series: Czech Republic

Our photographer is always on the move, and on her quest to fill 3 passports in one year, she has landed in the Czech Republic. And won it over. The Czech Republic has one of the most beautiful capital cities in europe: Prague! But not only! It’s also a wonderful patch of countryside in the middle of Europe. There are nostalgic railway tracks, virgin untouched nature and beautiful cinematic landscapes. And this is exactly the combination that what you will find in our new, small but fine City Series package!

(Actually, the Czech Republic was not only a single country, it used to be Bohemia, Moravia and parts of Silesia. But this is something for a history class, not for a backplate package description)

And as always with the City Series, you’ll find high-resolution composing backgrounds with 80 megapixels as 8-bit Tiff files. Focus points and perspectives were carefully chosen for optimal models integration. (Can you say “model integration?”, is that even a term?).  At any case we are giving you, huge, composition ready, carefully curated set of backplates.

We shot this package in the depth of the underworld. Actually, the photographer never returned. With his last powers he threw the memory card to us, a second before he was swallowed by flames. Now, this is what I call dedication.

OK, so we may have not sent our photographer to hell (or maybe we did, and we are just covering our tracks). Maybe we ventilated the good old fire extinguisher, because we set some fire in the studio. Again.

herz

Just like the heart above (sweet, right) you can merge, warp and combine some of the textures to create shapes to fit your story.

All the elements were shot on a black background so you can use them by setting the blending mode to “screen” and just stack them up.

Here is a quick sample of using the package to create a burning face:

You know what they say, you can’t beat the light in Europe, and within Europe, you can’t beat the light in Ireland.

And it’s true! The combination of soft overcast light with castles and greens is the perfect backplate for a knight story. Or a fairytale story. Depending which type o fantasy you like better.

The package contains 55 high-quality backplates from Ireland with a generous 5,900 x 3,800 pixels files!

There are many castles and ruins reminiscent of medieval times, a few quaint streets with colorful pubs and a few special coastal landscapes, such as the tourist highlight in Northern Ireland, the Giant’s Causeway:

Actually, we are short of both fairytale and knight stories, so i you submit a showcase, you’ll get a $10 coupon

Hand-painted Backdrop – Extremely Rusty Brown

$

Some of the iconic portrait photographers, like Annie Leibovitz have a very common look for their studio portraits, they are shot against a hand painted textured backdrop. You know what I am talking about. Those gorgeous backdrops with random soft patters.

Those backdrops are hand painted on canvas (just like works of art), and show great details and spectacular color. This Decayed White backdrop evokes strong feelings and it is probably our most favorite one in the store.

You know what else is incredible about those backdrops? They are hand-painted and that means that there are no two backdrops alike. Sadly, they are also very expensive.

But still we want you to be able to use such gorgeous backdrop. Our solution: we shot 15 variations of such a backdrop at varying lighting conditions so you can apply them to ‘regular’ studio shot. Here is an example of what it looks like:

As always, we provide high quality, 16 bit, 36 megapixel TIFF files.

Outdoor Fashion Lightroom Presets

We probably spend 85% of our time browsing through high-end magazines (the other 15% is invested in jet plane flight training, don’t ask). But spending so much time with those wonderful covers and mid sections incepted an idea. It was crazy, but we had to give it a go. What if we built the best Lightroom presets for outdoor fashion based on those magazin images. There were a few distinct looks that we just had to have in our workflow so we made them some presets.

But, it felt too confined, those presets were calling for freedom. So we decided to share them with the world.

Actually, these are not your ordinary presets. (Well, they are ordinary in the sense that they will work with Lightroom, but this is where it stops). We took very special attention to avoid tweaking the “Basic settings” tab. And there is a good reason for this. That means that you can apply any correction on the photo: exposure, white balance and so on, and applying the preset will not screw with them. This is like +10 on your creative control level.

Our biggest focus, as always, was color, and we poured our entire color knowhow (and our souls) into this set. Actually, here are a few samples that you can check for yourself:

Testimonials

Pratik Naik
I was really impressed with Conny’s retouching tookit. I am all about efficiency and simplicity. Most of my workflow consists of tools that Conny has in his toolkit. My favorite one was smart liquify, which allows you to liquify in a nondestructive manner. Before seeing this, I didn’t even know it could be done. I can vouch for this toolkit because it has all the tools you’d need for a serious workflow.
Pratik Naik / Solstice Retouch
Lulie Talmor
I absolutely love Connie’s Retouching Toolkit. I personally used to avoid pre-made retouching actions and scripts because I found they try to automate all the work for the retoucher but ultimately achieving bad results. Conny’s Toolkit is meant for a high end retoucher who works on all the intimate details of images themselves, but helps make their workflow more efficient and accurate by introducing actions and scripts I never thought possible. Though he offers many great tools, my all time favorite feature is the Gradient Map Maker. It makes making gradient maps so much easier that it has completely opened up the tool for me. I now use this script for virtually all my images and I feel silly for working as long as I did without it. I highly recommend any serious high end retoucher to try it out!

It’s not our creative nature to be lazy, but to be efficient. I tried a lot to speed up my workflow. Built my own set of actions, created actions for my personal brushes and setups for the clone tool and healing brush, but it was just a compromise. The actions palette wasn’t that great to work fast, ’cause as you know it’s not that well structured. You lose time seeking through all the different actions.
I was so happy to find the Retouching Toolkit. Everything I need is well organized in this little panel. Whether I need my brush for Dodge & Burn or I want to set up a Frequency Separation. It’s right there.
Every little feature by itself is well-conceived. You will have access to all the settings you want to choose and which correlates your workflow. Boom. You’re ready. Forget about the mathematics behind your Inverted Highpass. Set the first setting you need, the rest happens by magic. You need different setups for your radius? No problem, just run the button twice and you will get your sets. Even renamed with your settings.
My personal highlight is the Smart Liquify. After you have tweaked the liquify tool, you want to change something in previous layers? Just do your changes and update your Smart Liquify. It’s that simple. Thank you mates. You rocked my workflow.
Allen Turner

Mr. Brownz is what I’d call best in class. I mean have you seen his Toolbox, crazy right?

This is why we are so excited to be releasing this collection of backgrounds for you. It’s 4 backgrounds and they are as good as it gets! It may not make sense in first glance, but the amount of details is staggering and the more you look the more it makes sense. Kinda like the “hitchhiker through the galaxy”. You have to completely fall in.

What can you expect in this package?

superawesomeness Brownz pureness: super high-res files with more details than you can ever imagine. Four of those!

All files are TIFF files with 5000px or 6000px on the long side + you get all the layers!

You gotta admit, that’s a perfect, solid basis for a composite!

Photographer’s Choice: Portrait Edition

For a long time we were thinking about how we can support even a “small” or “average” photo studio. Not everyone has hundreds of $$ for dozens of packages. On the other hand, many photographers probably don’t need 300 variations of fire, 500 lighting effect and 600 backdrops.

This is where we took our thinking caps off and just hit the streets, and by “streets” I mean our photographer friends. We asked “what would you want to see in a packages that will help you?”. Their answer led the way to the first Photographer’s Choice package. It contains am impressive variety of textures and overlays. But its not just samples. The quantity is enough to work with and actually create something.

Our first Photgrapher’s Choice package has 192 textures, backgrounds & effects + 3 LR presets + 5 LUT files.

That means you get a total of 200 files with a colorful mix of 28 different packages. This is ideal for portraits and smaller composites.

This package contains:

City Series: Car Graveyard

They are stranded somewhere in the desolated woods of North America. No now know how they got there, or why they haven’t moved for so long. This about all the dreams of american teenagers that could have been fulfilled with this lot.

If it was not clear, we are talking about the muscle cars of the fifties (you saw Grease 2, right?). Sadly, those cars have had better days.

Our traveling photographer was touring the U.S with a medium format Mamiya and created this treasure trove of Photoshop assets and backgrounds for your pleasure.

You can easily place models or items in these scenarios. All the way up to full body.

Like all other City-Series packages, careful attention was given to make sure that the backplates are composite friendly:

  • The focus point is perfect for placing a model in the foreground
  • Each file comes in extremely high resolution of 80 megapixels
  • You can grade Tiff files without any significant loss of details
  • There are no burnt or under-exposed areas in the photos, so there is plenty of room for maneuver
  • The focal length of 28mm in digital medium format is perfect to incorporate models that are recorded with 30-40 megapixels and 50mm lens – without enlarging the background or shrinking the model!

Lightroom Presets: Four Seasons

Here is why people are excited about this package (if you wanna join our beta team, join our group here). It’s because most lightroom presets are based around exposure and white balance changes. This is not very clever. Well, its very fast to create, but it totally kills your ability to use those basic settings on your files. How did we make it better? We did not touch the basic settings!

This gives you total control over the parameters of the photo, but you can still apply the relevant looks!

CGI Castle

Admit it! you’ve been wanting a three-dimensional, highly-detailed, perfectly-lit castle from the day you knew King Arthur existed. and we are here to provide!

We got you covered! This CGI castle is massive! Its 10,000px x 10,000px and it comes as a PSB file (which is adobe-talk for big PSD files). I know, it’s fancy. There is a reason though. We are delivering a PSB file because we have six lighting scenes as layers built into the file. This give you lots of options when coming to place a pre-lit model in the castle.

Actually, it’s not just six layers of lighting, you can mix, match and mask them to get quite a huge number of scenarios.

To complete this PBSness we are also including a Z-map, which is fancy-speak for depth map. It’s data that that be used to set a the focal point and depth of field as you want.

Pretty clever, right?

All that awesomeness comes in one 3.4GB file so prepare for some major download

To play with the focus go to: Filter -> Blur -> Lens Blur and select the right mask as depth map source
